Bombino / Temples / Mono / Medicine @ Austin Psych Fest 5/3/2014
Medicine closed out Saturday perfectly with their abrasive yet eclectically catchy guitar tones. When they abruptly announced that they had played their last song the crowd sprang to life, clapping and shouting loud enough that the powers at be had no choice but to let them do another song. Brad Laner launched into an extended tape gouging harmonic introduction to "Aruca," the single off their first album. The crowd danced along, hopping up and down and trying to recreate the reaction their heyday audiences had in their video for "The Pink." This experience sums up what Psych Fest gets right: an eager commemoration to a niche musical history and present that might otherwise be overlooked. - [Read The Horn]
Day 2 of Austin Psych Fest (5/3) was a good example of the wide variety of "psych" you get at APF, be it the pop Bolan-isms of Temples, reformed shoegazers Medicine's metallic white noise, Tuareg guitarist Bombino, Japanese rockers Mono, the groovy goth of The Horrors, or the pure muscle of Destruction Unit. We already published pictures of The Horrors set but we've got pics from the rest of those bands and lots more of Saturday's action in this post.
Pictures from day 1 are here. More from day 2 are below...
