Perfect Pussy, SOPHIE, Empress Of & more played Pitchfork’s SXSW day party at French Legation Museum (pics)

One of Pitchfork's SXSW events in Austin this year was the first of two day parties at French Legation Museum, which we caught this past Wednesday (3/12). The show was set up across two outdoor stages in the museum's large grass area, with people (including many parents and their children) lounging around the entire venue, not just near the stages. For the most part, the stages were separated by genre, with the dancey sounds of SOPHIE, Cashmere Cat, The Range, DJ Rashad and more on one, and the rock sounds of Perfect Pussy, Speedy Ortiz, Ex Hex and more on the other.

I mainly caught the latter three. Perfect Pussy were plagued by some technical difficulties, but otherwise intense as always (we also caught them on a bridge, at NPR, and at Red 7). Speedy sounded great too. They get better every time and the new stuff was excellent live. Ex Hex also put on a fantastic set that has me looking very forward to their album. (We also caught Speedy and Ex Hex at our Saturday BV party. Stay tuned for pics from that.)
