Coachwhips / Destruction Unit @ Beerland - 3/15/2014 SXSW
We walked into Beerland for this unofficial show on the last night of SXSW (3/15) as local hardcore band Wiccans were tearing things up to a mosh-happy crowd. Unfortunately, we didn't get any pics of them, but we did get shots of the next three bands -- Technicolor Teeth, Destruction Unit and Coachwhips -- which are in this post.
Technicolor Teeth, whose drummer also sings in Tenement, brought a similar aggression to that band, but heavier on the shoegaze and psych elements. That made for a perfect transition into Destruction Unit, whose intense psychedelic punk and thrilling live show made for some of the best sets we saw at SXSW (we also caught them at Red 7 a day earlier and outside of Beerland two days before that.)
Finally, John Dwyer's pre-Thee Oh Sees band Coachwhips, who had reunited for SXSW, wrapped up the show playing on the floor in the corner near the bar. I couldn't see the band myself (though I had a pretty good idea of what was going on thanks to the previous night's bridge show), but I could definitely see the crowd entirely surrounding the band and going wild.
